I rested my elbows onto the smooth wood as I leaned over to look into the water. It felt good to be back on a ship and breathing in the fresh ocean air. Steel wrapped his arms around my waist from behind and rested his chin on my shoulder. His stubble brushed against my cheek as I leaned into him. Yesterday, Steel and I had spent the remainder of the day in his room. Gregor had even brought us dinner there. The food consisted of chicken and vegetables that had been prepared specially for me. Felix was amazing and I missed eating meals with Steel.

“I never realized just how much I really missed being on the water.” I took a deep breath and savored it. “It’s completely different from living under the surface.”

“It never gets old to me,” Steel said. “Gregor says we’ll be at the island in a couple of days. The crew isn’t too happy about it, but they’ll get over it.”

“I don’t want to upset them, but at least they won’t have to come on the island this time. What happened to the others? Why have so few joined you this time? There’s not even half the amount as there was before.”

“Not many pirates are into actively searching for sirens. They feared for their lives and didn’t want to have any part of it. I had to set some of them straight when they attempted to fight me for the captain position, but it all worked out in the end. Some pirates are loyal, not all, and it seems I’ve discovered which ones are dependable. Most of the guys know I’ll get them some gold, but some of them missed you too. Like Bastian, Gregor, and Felix for example. You left an impression on these men after fighting the Kraken and chasing it away like you did.”

“How do you think they feel about me being friends with the Kraken now?”

“I know Bastian doesn’t like it. He’s still very upset about Barty’s death. He doesn’t like to talk about it, but you can see it in his haunted expressions with every glance.”

My gut twisted with guilt. Barty had been killed when the Kraken attacked The Sea Nymph’s Revenge. Bastian was the type of guy who was always smiling, but when he lost his brother Barty, it left a hole inside of him. Barty was a sweet and easy-going guy. He and Bastian would often be found laughing together at some inside joke. Since I’ve been on this ship, the only time I’d seen Bastian smile was after I first arrived. Since then, his mouth had permanently been twisted into a frown.

“I hate that Barty is no longer with us,” I whispered.

“I do too. He was a good pirate and a good man. Always did whatever you asked of him. He was someone I could count on.” Steel let out a breath. “It’s definitely a lot quieter without him, but I’m not sure if that’s a good thing. You could always expect a good laugh with Barty around.
